Inclusion remains dream: unemployment among people with disabilities is booming!

Österreich - On April 29, 2025, the alarming situation of people with disabilities on the labor market in Austria will be discussed. The number of unemployed people with disabilities has more than doubled in the past ten years, which, according to a report by ots.at, can be returned to insufficient access to an inclusive job market. Georg Willeit, Managing Director of Lebenshilfe Tirol, commented on the occasion of the unemployed day and called for an end to discrimination and considerable efforts for inclusion.

It is particularly worrying that the activities of people with disabilities are often not considered to be gainful employment. These affected people are not subject to labor law and only receive pocket money - around 27,000 people in Austria work under such conditions. In his speech, Willeit commemorates the "crippling group" from the 1920s, which campaigned for the rights of people with disabilities. These historical references underline that claims for a legal claim to state services for man -worth working and living are not yet fulfilled.

results of the inclusion barometer

The inclusion barometer of [Aktion Mensch] (https://www.aktion-mensch.de/ Inclusion/Studien/Sumens-daten-fakten) also reports as part of the current study situation. This analysis, which the Handelsblatt Research Institute carried out in cooperation with Aktion Mensch for the twelfth time, shows that the labor market situation for people with disabilities in 2023 continued to deteriorate compared to the previous year. The unemployment figures and the unemployment rate of people with severe disabilities have increased, while more and more companies are not fulfilling their legal obligation to employ these people.

Despite the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities 15 years ago, there is hardly any progress in inclusion on the labor market. Willeit emphasizes that words alone are not enough - action must finally follow to make an actual improvement.

In view of these dramatic developments, it is crucial that social and political structures are covered in order to give people with disabilities access to a fair and respectful work environment. The struggle for inclusion and justice remains a central challenge.
