Wien, Österreich - On May 8, 2025, the 11th heart run Vienna took place, which according to Krone recorded a new participant record of 3645 runners. In addition, the "Kidsrun4kids" child run took place, which enriched the event and contributes to awareness of heart diseases. The atmosphere was both sporty and emotionally stressful. A dramatic incident occurred during the approximately 6 km long run: a participant collapsed due to heart problems. Immediate help came from a co -running doctor who started resuscitation. A doctor in the race used a defibrillator and the woman was successfully revived. She was immediately taken to the hospital with a helicopter. So far, there has been no clarity about the exact state of health of the woman, whether she had a heart attack or the fleeing heart, but it has survived and recovers.

The incident during the heart run is reminiscent of the increasing problems in the area of heart health. According to the German Heart Report 2024 , heart failure is the most common individual hospital treatments in Germany and is one of the ten most common causes of death. In 2022, mortality from heart failure increased to 37,570, which illustrates the urgency of medical care in this area.

The number of fully inpatient hospital admissions due to heart diseases has also increased. The most common causes contain coronary heart diseases, heart valve and cardiac arrhythmias as well as congenital heart defects. The number of deaths from coronary heart disease, which was 125,984, is particularly alarming

prevention and new approaches

Experts appeal to the need for interdisciplinary and multi-professional approaches in medical care in order to counteract the high level of illness and mortality from cardiovascular diseases that make up over 348,000 deaths per year. An increased preventive and education about the main causes, such as coronary heart diseases and high blood pressure, are of crucial importance.

In this context, the planned healthy heart law (GHG) is seen as a promising step to improve the situation in the field of heart health. Initiatives such as Herzlauf Vienna not only promote physical activity, but also set a sign of the importance of heart health in society.
