Violent storm in the Weiz district: 28 fire brigades in continuous use!
Bezirk Weiz, Steiermark, Österreich - On Thursday, June 26, 2025, the Weiz district in Styria was haunted by a violent thunderstorm with heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind. The storm reached the region around 4 p.m. and led to considerable damage, especially due to considerable floods in the local area. The first alarm for the Fladnitz fire brigade on the Teichalm took place at 4:35 p.m. due to water entry in a hotel. Afterwards, numerous fire brigades were alerted to support.
A total of 28 fire departments were in use in the Weiz district after the state control center registered over 58 missions. Hotspots, which were particularly affected, included Fladnitz, Passail and Gleisdorf. Due to the weather conditions, there were many fallen trees that were on the A2 motorway and a danger to traffic. In Weiz and St. Margarethen, some cars were hit by drunk trees, but fortunately the number of injuries failed to

The lightning strikes, which led to a forest fire on the Heulantsch, presented special challenges. The Fladnitz fire brigade and other weirs had to intervene to extinguish the fire. The commander of the Fladnitz fire brigade, Gerald Edlinger, described the assignment as one of the largest of the past few years, especially in view of the difficult conditions by the storm. Almost 20 firefighters were used in Fladnitz until around 10 p.m.
In addition, a lightning strike on the Ilzberg led to burning trees, which resulted in another use for 30 firefighters from the Puch fire department near Weiz. An animal rescue was necessary in Gleisdorf because a stork nest threatened to rush. The city park also had to be blocked. There were power failures in Passail and a large chestnut tree was torn down at the main square.
preliminary warnings and weather conditions
Already on Thursday morning, the Weather Service AT-Alert sent a warning for the extreme weather event, which was announced in Styria shortly before 1 p.m. The warning referred to storm gusts, floods, falling trees, hail and lightning strikes. In contrast to the massive damage in Weiz, the weather conditions calmed down on Friday night, which banned the risk of further storms for the weekend.
The influence of natural disasters on society is by no means new. According to various studies on natural disasters, which are reinforced by climate change, such extreme weather events have repeatedly recorded significant damage. Especially in Asia, the effects of natural disasters, such as constant floods and storms, are devastating for the population and infrastructures. The regional susceptibility to such disasters is reinforced by geographical and socio -economic factors, so that the poorer regions are often most affected. The incident in Weiz is locally, but it represents another reminder of how critically the weather can behave and what preparations are needed to cope with such operations.
