Mobile phone ban in schools: new rules for more concentration and security!
From May 1, 2025, a nationwide ban on cell phones, smartwatches and similar devices in the first eight school levels will apply in Austria. As kosmo , this ban concerns the entire stay at school and at school events. Education Minister Christoph Return (NEOS) described the measure as necessary in order to promote social skills of the students and to increase their ability to concentrate.
The new school regulation, however, allows individual solutions for schools. School partners, consisting of school, parent and teacher representatives, can make exceptions, for example to use cell phones during lunch break in leisure zones or for digital basic education projects in class. Teachers can therefore use cell phones in a very targeted manner in order to convey learning content or to process safety aspects on the Internet. In the event of several days such as sports weeks, "age -appropriate uses" are also planned, whereby time windows are to be planned for communication with the parents.
regulations and exceptions
After the 8th school level, individual regulations for classes or students are possible, also within the framework of special needs. This applies, for example, to pupils with medical needs who rely on certain apps such as blood sugar measurements. Responsibility for the safety of the smartphones still lies with the students. It is recommended to keep the devices safely in lockers or the like, since the unattended leaving behind in school bags is not considered sufficient.
In the event of regulatory violations, teachers may move in the cell phones until the end of the school day. In the case of repeated violations or problematic content, the cell phone is only returned to the legal guardians. The regulation is intended to clarify school management and teachers and needs to take into account the concerns of the school community, as well as orf determined.
school measures for online security
In addition to the introduction of the cell phone ban, the government plans to offer training for teaching staff in digital media education and didactics and to further develop the subject "digital basic education". This is intended to help schools to deal more intensively with the challenges of the digital world, including topics such as cyber grooming and radicalization. Family Minister Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) supports this initiative and emphasizes the need to reduce the screen time of the students.
The new regulation is part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen school education in Austria. The previous practice of allowing school autonomy to use mobile phones had often led to enforcement problems, which made a clear, nationwide regulation necessary. In this initiative, the return sees a step towards a learning environment in which school is to be established as a place for concentration and security. The comprehensive responsibility for the serious implementation of the ban lies with the respective schools, which can decide on the details of the handling for themselves, such as "https://www.oe24.at/Opolitik/wiederkehr-ab-diesem-tag-gilt-gilt-handy-verbot-in-schulen/627391383 confirmed.
