Hamburg remains red-green: Tschenscher's re-election on May 7th!
On April 24, 2025, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens renewed their coalition in Hamburg for many years. The aim is to continue the collaboration in the Hanseatic city and tackle challenges together. Mayor Peter Tschentscher will be re -elected on May 7th, and the coalition partners already have ambitious plans for the upcoming legislative period.
The negotiations to continue the cooperation began on March 27 and were led to teams in ten. In addition to the occupation of the Senate posts, the authorities were also cut on the agenda. The mayor calls for more responsibilities for the SPD, especially in the area of energy, which could possibly lead to the transfer of the Energy Ministry from the environmental authority. The tax authority could also be responsible for the districts in the future.
coalition agreement and future challenges
The talks between the two parties clarify that the SPD currently seven and the Greens four senators. However, the management of the environmental department remains a central question: Jens Kerstan from the Greens is no longer available due to health reasons. The internal competition is also reflected in the election result: In the election on March 2, 2025, the SPD became the strongest force again, while the Greens were replaced by the CDU to third place.
The new coalition agreement bears the motto "confident, solidarity, sustainable - make Hamburg's future powerful". In this document, which was formulated on June 6, it is emphasized that the city wants to work on difficult challenges. These challenges are not only locally, but also show themselves in response to the global crisis through the Coronavirus. Many Hamburgers fear for their health, their jobs and economic stability after pandemic, but the city has reacted strongly and withstands.
Hamburg, with its approximately 1.8 million inhabitants, is the second largest city in Germany and one of the smallest federal states. The coalition agreement is regarded as a framework of action for the coming years in order to make the city sustainable in various areas - from business to science to social institutions. The area of tension between the political partners and the expectations of the citizens also play a central role in the future.
