Great fire in Nußdorf: East Tyroleans should avoid heart-jesu fire!
Nußdorf-Debant, Österreich - On June 28, 2025, the Rossbacher recycling facility in Nußdorf-Debant came to a devastating major fire. The firefighters of several East Tyrolean municipalities are in use to combat the flames and prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings. In view of the situation, the state of Tyrol has published an appeal to the population that urgently prohibits the inflammation of the traditional heart-Jesu fire in the region. This happens to minimize possible additional fire risks. Dolomitenstadt reports that due to the fire, rail traffic between Lienz and Oberdrauburg was also temporarily stopped.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the state control center received the message about the fire, which is characterized by considerable smoke development. In order to protect the population, six municipalities, including Nußdorf-Debant and Lienz, the AT-Alert, an Austrian warning system, were activated. As kosmo , warning messages were sent directly to the mobile phones of the residents, and these were instructed to keep windows, doors and roof hatches closed.
health risks and precautionary measures
The emergency services consist of seven fire departments with around 130 members who do everything they can to control the flames. However, experts warn of serious health risks through smoke development, especially as a result of the combustion of plastics. Possible consequences are irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes as well as serious respiratory problems, especially for risk groups. The population is therefore urgently asked to avoid the area in the near area of the fire location and to stay in their houses.
A conscious electricity shutdown in the area of the fire was also initiated. The authorities call for people to also switch off their ventilation and air conditioning systems in these areas. The AT-Alert remains in force until further notice for the municipalities of Nussdorf-Debant, Lienz-Stadt, Iselsberg-Stronach, Lavant, Tristach and Dölsach. The exact cause of the fire is previously unknown.
causes of fire in recycling systems
The causes of fires in recycling systems are diverse and can range from self-inflammation, biological and chemical reactions to electrical effects or arson. Blauglicht emphasizes that fires in such companies can often release considerably more emissions than all Swedish waste incineration plants in one year. The increase in lithium-ion batteries as a dangerous disruption has also led to an increase in fire risks in recent years.
Research to improve fire protection technologies is therefore becoming increasingly important. The necessary technical measures include infrared or image detection systems for fire detection as well as automatic sprinkler systems. These developments are essential to integrate fire protection in such systems in the planning phase in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
