FPÖ warns: Cash suspension endangered the citizens' freedom of payment!

Deutschland - FPÖ money and currency spokesman NABG. Alexander Petschnig has sharp criticism of the ÖBB and the supplier Dons. The background is a new discount of five percent for card payments in the dining car. Petschnig sees this discount as a silent price surcharge for cash and thus as an interference with the freedom of payment of the citizens. He explains that cash is a tried and tested, anonymous and secure means of payment and should not be dismissed as outdated.

Following the argumentation of Petschnig, such discount models, especially older people who often use cash. From the FPÖ's point of view, it is important to introduce statutory protective mechanisms for cash. Petschnig therefore calls for a federal law guarantee to accept cash, a ban on discrimination against cash as well as the anchorage of cash and the right to cash in the constitution.

Current use of means of payment

The discourse on cash is very relevant against the background of a study by the Deutsche Bundesbank, published in July 2023. According to this study, about half of the payment processes in everyday life are handled with cash in Germany. In contrast, the use of indifferent payment methods has increased by 7 percentage points to 49%in recent years, which marks a significant trend in society.

The increase in mobile payment methods is particularly noteworthy, the proportion of which has increased triple and is now 6%. In terms of sales, the debit card remains the most popular means of payment with 32%, followed by cash with 26%. The change in payment behavior shows that more and more people are paying small amounts without cash.

challenges and advantages

Nevertheless, 15% of the respondents perceive access to cash as difficult, an increase of 6% compared to 2021. This challenge concerns both urban and rural regions. While cash offers protection of privacy, many appreciate the comfort and speed of unacceptable means of payment. Based on these results, the discourse on the access and acceptance of cash as well as the associated legal regulations is more urgent than ever.

The current developments illustrate how important the discussion about cash versus cashless is in the modern means of payment. The FPÖ and various citizens' groups are committed to ensuring that cash will continue to play an equal role in payment transactions in the future.

For a deeper insight into the current discussion, it is advisable to take a look at the results of the Bundesbank, which regularly carries out studies on payment behavior. These studies provide information about how payment behavior in Germany changes and which trends are emerging.
