FPÖ with surprise success: migrants vote against their tradition!
In the Vienna election in 2025, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) achieved a significant increase in votes of 13.24 percentage points and thus came to a total of 20.35 percent of the vote. Despite this increase, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) remains the strongest force in the capital with 39.38 percent. However, Mayor Michael Ludwig excluded a coalition with the FPÖ, which means that the freedoms have to go to the opposition. FPÖ state party chairman Dominik Nepp announced that it uncovered the "scandals of the SPÖ" and perform control functions. These developments illuminate the complex election behavior of the voters with a migration background.
It is particularly interesting that the FPÖ was able to score with voters with a migration background. Data show that 25 percent of the voters born in ex-Yugoslavia and 21 percent of the people entitled to vote with Turkish roots chose the FPÖ. This election decision falls into a context in which many of these voters act despite the critical attitude of the FPÖ for immigration in protest against established parties. The commitment of the FPÖ, especially with messages to social benefits and fairness, addresses the needs of these groups of voters, whereby personal security and social justice are primarily for them.election behavior of immigrants
An analysis of the election behavior shows that more than 200,000 Austrian citizens entitled to vote were born abroad. The results of the election are based on 1,500 sprinkling results and official population data. Among the eligible people from the former Yugoslavia, 44 percent opted for the SPÖ and 25 percent for the FPÖ. For voters with a Turkish migration background, the SPÖ share was even 46 percent, while the FPÖ received 21 percent. The number of votes for the Söz list reached 17 percent among these voters, which also illuminates the current political climate. [OGM] offers a comprehensive analysis.
Although the FPÖ receives a positive signal through the voices of migrants, the election success remains in contrast to the general trend in Vienna, where the high proportion of migration leads to more liberal elections and means less support for the FPÖ. Sociologist Kenan Güngör explains that contact with different cultures reduces skepticism in relation to the FPÖ. The urban population tends to be younger, educated and cosmopolitan.
Spös Mobilization strategy
The SPÖ has carried out remarkable mobilization compared to its competitors. A total of 3,500 activists were deployed who made around 30,000 home visits. In addition, 10,000 phone calls and 1,000 election campaign events were organized to mobilize voters. These activities speak for the strategic planning of the SPÖ and its ability to gain voters who may want to vote against the FPÖ tactically. The perception of Mayor Ludwig as a stable and experienced guide has also mobilized a positive influence on the voters [Kurier]
Overall, the election results show that despite the success of the FPÖ, especially within the migrant groups, the SPÖ is a solid strategy for election and can therefore continue to assert its dominance in Vienna.
