Horror 2025: Record delays and failures in the sky!

Wien, Österreich - In the summer of 2025, air traffic in Europe is affected by massive delays and failures. The latest figures of the legal service provider Flightright show alarming developments in the period between June 22nd and July 5th. Especially at the Vienna Airport, Austria's largest turnstile, there were significant problems: 1,531 of 5,636 flights reached their goal late, which corresponds to a delay rate of 27 %. In addition, 46 flights were completely painted during this period.

But also the regional airports in Graz, Linz and Salzburg were not spared because every fifth flight missed the schedule. These trends are not only limited to Austria. Popular travel destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece also have high delay rates. In Spain, almost 29 % of the flights were unpunctual within two weeks, with 465 failures. Italy recorded 333 flight cancellations and over 11,000 delays. The situation in Greece was particularly serious, where 38 % of the flights were late, which corresponds to 6,860 late flights and 38 deletions.

international trends and comparisons

The problems are not only limited to the Mediterranean countries. In Turkey, every fifth flight missed their time window, which means 2,245 late starts from 10,176. The airline Tap Portugal cut off particularly badly, with a delay rate of 37 %. Air France and Swiss were also noticeably hit with 22.7 % or 22.4 % delays. In contrast, Austrian Airlines (AUA) kept a quota of 10.8 % in the acceptable area.

The downward trend in air traffic is not new and is caused by various factors. In 2024, almost 287 million passengers were affected by flight problems across Europe, which corresponds to 30 % of all passengers. The delay and failure rate was 31.3 %in the previous year. In Germany in particular, this quota reached its peak in July 2024.

critical analysis and outlook

The situation clearly shows that European airlines and commercial airports need an urgent solution to increase efficiency. The most common reasons for delays are often outside the control of airlines or airports, such as unfavorable weather conditions or medical emergencies. However, passengers are only entitled to compensation if the disorders are caused by the airlines. In 2024, 38 million flight travelers were entitled to compensation worldwide, of which 2.5 million in Germany.

How the situation will develop remains to be seen. However, it is clear that passengers have to expect still high delay and cancellation rates in the coming weeks and months. A look at the flight data could help to make informed travel decisions while airlines and airports work on solutions.
