EU plans to sensation: cheaper fertilizer imports from the USA!
The European Union faces a crucial turn in its trade relationships with the USA, especially with regard to fertilizers. The EU is considering reducing tariffs on fertilizers from the USA. This initiative is part of the ongoing trade talks with the US government, which are under the leadership of President Donald Trump. EU agricultural commissioner Christophe Hansen sees the customs reduction as a "option" and potential progress that could increase the European purchases of US fertilizers. The background of these considerations is the reduction in deliveries of fertilizers from Russia, which were carried out as a result of the Ukraine War. Hansen emphasized that many Europeans would prefer fertilizers from the USA, which underlines the urgency of these conversations.
Apparently, the EU is planning to increase the tariffs on nitrogen -based fertilizers from Russia to 100 percent within the next three years, which could lead to a severe decline in the annual trade flow worth 1.3 billion euros. Currently, standard EU tariffs are currently applying 5.5 % to ammonia imports and 6.5 % on nitrogen fertilizers. In addition, there is an anti-dumping tax of EUR 29.48 per ton on US urine-collecting ammonium nitrate, which lasted around 75 percent of EU imports from US fertilizers. These considerations could also have an impact on the US market, since the EU moved into only 8 percent of its nitrogen fertilizer imports from the USA in 2023, while 24 percent came from Russia.
economic effects of the customs increases
In addition to the fertilizers, the EU also promises the possibility of increased purchase of hormone -free beef from the USA. An important topic in the discussions is also the discussion of a mutual agreement to eliminate tariffs on EU and US wines. Nevertheless, the EU sticks to its strict standards for food safety. These developments come at a sensitive time when US President Trump has already increased tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico to 25 percent, while similar customs increases for the EU have been announced in early April. These measures could lead to a decline in EU BIP by around 0.5 percent, since tariffs can slow down the trade and have a significant impact on the economy of developing and emerging countries.
The Kiel Institute for the global economy also warned that a general high customs of Europe could damage a three -digit billion -dollar amount annually. The German auto industry is particularly concerned about the customs threats, since the trade balance for cars between Germany and the USA is very unbalanced.
transatlantic relationships in focus
The discussions about trade relationships between the EU and the USA are influenced by the latest political developments. After Trump's re -election in November 2024, the European Parliament debated the effects on transatlantic relationships. Leading EU MPs called for a continuation of the cooperation during the week of Trump's inauguration. On February 12, 2025, a debate between MEPs, representatives of the Council and the European Commission on the customs threats of the Trump government took place.
Adam Szłapka, Polish Minister of European Affairs, emphasized the advantages of an open, regular and fair international trade, while Maroš Šefčovič, member of the European Commission, criticized US tariffs as harmful to companies and consumers. Bernd Lange, Chairman of the Committee on International Trade, pointed out the possibility of counter -tariffs, while Sophie Wilmès, deputy chair of the parliamentary delegation for relationships with the United States, emphasized the importance of deterrent against tariffs
With these developments in mind, it remains to be seen how the negotiations between the EU and the USA will continue and what effects they will ultimately have on transatlantic trade.
