Escalation in Syria: Almost 600 deaths after fighting between Drusen and Bedouins

In the Syrian province of Suwaida, there were severe battles between Druze and Sunni Bedouins on Sunday. These clashes were triggered by a robbery on a Drusian adolescent, in which members of a Bedouin tribe had a crucial word. In the midst of violence, the new Syrian government agencies under President Ahmed al-Sharaa try to produce stability in the country after Bashar al-Assad has been overturned. The conflicts in the region have increased significantly in recent days.

By Thursday, the Syrian government troops that had been used to take control withdrew from the city of Suwaida after Imported Israel and bombed government buildings in Damascus. These measures were taken to request the withdrawal of the Syrian troops from the Drusen region. Nevertheless, there were further battles that were referred to by the Syrian presidency as violations of a previously agreed ceasefire. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (Sohr), almost 600 people have been killed since Sunday, including 27 Drusen, two of whom were children.

The UN reports about almost 80,000 displaced persons due to the violent outbreak in the region. At the same time, the hospitals in Suwaida are overwhelmed due to the ongoing fights. The UNHCR also reports that a warehouse of the Syrian Red Half moon was damaged by fire. The Syrian government's security forces are on alert, while Drusian clergymen and governor Mustafa al-Bakur call up and demand more determined intervention by the central government.

The fighting also led to the ignition of houses of Drusen in towns such as Walra and al-Masraa. The UN human rights office has reported further human rights violations in this region, with reports on executions and looting. In this tense situation, Israel announced that humanitarian aid in the form of food packages and medical care worth over 500,000 euros for the Drusen in Syria.

In response to the escalation of the conflict, the German Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul appealed to the Syrian government to promote a peaceful post -war society and to support the integration of all population groups. The security forces of the Syrian transitional government were again posted at the Suwaida edges, while Israel is ready to tolerate the presence of the Syrian troops for 48 hours to prevent further escalation.

The Druze represent a religious minority in Syria, which included around 700,000 people before the war in 2011, with most of them living in Suwaida. The given circumstances and the recurring violence have triggered concern about the future of this group, which in the past had to read under a large number of conflicts.
