Renewable energies: 14 countries bundle forces for doubling!

Washington, USA - On June 5, 2025, the NDC Partnership released a new short dossier, which gives the political decision -makers of the countries clear information on the integration of renewable energies in national climate ". According to OTS a strategy and leading institutions developed that promotes the tripling of the capacities for renewable energies. The document is entitled "Tripling Renewables: Powering Climate Action Across Sectors" and offers various measures to strengthen the planning for renewable energies in the Nationalally Determined Contributions (NDCS) of the countries.

H.E. Mr. Ole Thonke, Denmark climatic ambassador, explained that the tripling of capacity for renewable energies is crucial for compliance with the Paris Agreement. For many countries, renewable energy sources are considered the cheapest type of electricity generation. Pablo Vieira, global director of the NDC Partnership, pointed out that this tripling could be reached. Last year, renewable energies made up a third of the global electricity generation and 86 % of the new energy capacities were on these sources.

limits and possibilities

Despite the positive developments, over 65 % of the countries have set specific, measurable destinations for renewable energies in the last NDC round. However, there are significant gaps between the national energy plans and the goals of the NDCs. The next NDC round offers an important opportunity to integrate the goals for renewable energies into national climate and development plans.

The short dossier contains six central considerations to accelerate the use of renewable energies:

  • alignment of national energy plans to the NDCs.
  • Establishment of cooperation mechanisms for the inclusion of renewable energies in the sectoral planning.
  • evaluation of value chains and interest groups to support climate protection measures.
  • Development of timetables for technology and financing needs.
  • sensitization of the public and participation of subnational governments.
  • Support of innovations and new technologies as well as business models.

The role of the NDC Partnership

The NDC Partnership now comprises 227 members, including 129 countries and 57 international organizations and development banks, which underlines global cooperation in the field of climate protection. BMZ emphasizes that the partnership enables climate goals to reconcile with the sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda 2030 and to promote the implementation of the national climate contributions (NDCS). For example, threshold and developing countries can request tailor-made support.

The NDC Partnership also coordinates the exchange of experiences and best practices and has over 95 member countries who use their support. A special program, the "NDC 3.0 Navigator", offers information on the more ambitious wording and implementation of the updated NDCs.

a global context

The Paris' Convention, which was adopted in 2015, provides for a five-year cycle to increase climate protection ambitions. In 2023, the global inventory (GST) presented its results that increase the pressure on the contracting states to take more ambitious measures. By 2025, the states will have to present a national climate target (NDC) for 2035, which is based on the Katowitz rule book. UBA refers to the demands from the first GST, to which the tripling of the expansion of renewable energies by 2030 and an accelerated departure belonging of fossil fuels.

The NDCs should be formulated transparently, comprehensively and with quantifiable target values in order to limit the global temperature rise to below the pre -industrial level. According to the UNEP EMISSION GAP Report 2024, the world is currently heading for a temperature increase of 2.6 to 3.1 ° C, which requires more urgent measures.
