Energy costs on the upswing: SPÖ demands relief for the citizens!
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - In a crucial turn in Austrian energy policy, the SPÖ, represented by its energy spokesman Alois Schroll, has reached an agreement on over -profit tax for energy companies. According to Schroll, these companies have made billions of euros in oversights in recent years, which in particular has burdened the customers. With this new regulation, which provides for an annual contribution output of 200 million euros in budget renovation, the Social Democrats demand a fair contribution to the energy companies. "The energy companies are now making a fair contribution to the budget renovation!", Schroll enthusiastically announced, while he praised the cooperation with the parliamentary clubs of ÖVP and NEOS, like OTS reported.
While the SPÖ is making progress, the current coalition negotiations between the FPö and ÖVP show little interest in relief for the citizens, especially with regard to increasing energy costs. This is happening right now where the electricity price brake and other support measures have expired since January 2025, which will put a heavy burden on households and small and medium -sized companies (SMEs). Schroll criticized the rejection of the measures proposed by the SPÖ to relieve them, which included a reduction in electricity and natural gas taxes and the continuation of grants for low-income households. According to Schroll, the decisions of the FPÖ and the ÖVP make it clear that their interests do not match those of the population, such as Boerse-Express reported.
"The rejection of our suggestions shows that the FPÖ is only apparently the representative of the 'little man' and that the ÖVP only represents the interests of their lobbies," says Schroll. The rejected suggestions are intended to stop the upward trend of energy costs, which will also put a strain on people in Austria by hundreds of euros per year. The impending coalition between the FPÖ and ÖVP could thus mean a bad future for the Austrian population, warned Schroll.
