Darmann: Karner ignores asylum stop and endangers our security!
EU, Europa - On May 24, 2025, FPÖ security spokesman NABG. Mag. Gernot Darmann significant criticism of the current asylum policies of the government and in particular the savings in the asylum area, which were proposed by the ÖVP Interior Minister Karner. According to Darmann, these savings are based on mere presumptions and are not sufficient to ensure the safety of the population. Instead, he calls for urgent investments that put security at the forefront.
Darmann criticizes Karner's refusal to introduce an asylum stop and start a comprehensive deportation offensive. He emphasizes that the financial burden of the state support of illegal immigration must ultimately be borne by the taxpayers.
criticism of asylum policy
The inactivity of the government has negative effects on social areas such as the health and education system and internal security, Darmann continues. Current figures on illegal immigration in the EU underline the ineffectiveness of the EU asylum package, which has been discussed in recent years. He also criticizes that despite the cuts in families and pensioners, funds for illegal immigration will continue to be issued.
Darmann therefore demands that the interior minister finally impose an asylum stop and initiates an effective deportation offensive. This would bring a significant relief for taxpayers and reduce the pressure on the social systems.
Reform of European asylum law
in 2023, 1.1 million asylum applications were made in the EU, the highest level since 2016. In Germany alone, applications amounted to around 330,000, which further increases the pressure on the national systems. With the new regulation, incoming migrants must be registered at the EU external borders, which should enable the applications to be processed faster.
long -term perspectives and critical voices
In the long term, the reform could actually reduce the number of refugees looking for asylum in Germany, since people with low chances of recognition could already be rejected at the external borders. However, critics, including human rights organizations, fear that the new regulations do not adequately take into account the rights of particularly protective persons, such as unaccompanied minors. Hungary and Poland have also spoken out against the solidarity mechanism and there is a possibility that the EU Commission subsequently intervenes in order to accompany compliance.
Overall, the discussion about asylum policy is characterized by intensive debates in both Austria and at European level, in which economic considerations and the preservation of human rights often collide. The path to an effective and fair asylum policy remains a central challenge for the politics of both levels.
