Found prices explode: more expensive refueling on Good Friday!

On April 16, 2025, the ÖAMTC gives practical tips for drivers who want to recharge your batteries. The current analysis of fuel prices shows that they are highest, especially on Good Friday. In order to avoid recurring price increases annually, the ÖAMTC advises to plan the refueling well and to consider the price differences between the holidays. These can fluctuate between 3.5 and 5.5 cents per liter, whereby the prices on Easter Sunday and Monday are usually cheaper. According to ots.at , the average liter price is currently just over 1.50 euros, while the crude oil prices are comparable to mid-2021.

The sunken crude oil prices hardly arrive at consumers. Anyone who fueled in 2021 paid around 1.20 euros for one liter of diesel and for super around 1.25 euros. Today prices in the Austrian federal states are different. The lowest prices for diesel and super are listed in the following overview:

federal state diesel (euro) great (euro)
Burgenland 1.449 1.449
Carinthia 1.399 1.439
Lower Austria 1.404 1.419
Upper Austria 1.417 1.404
Salzburg 1.433 1.444
Styria 1.418 1.422
tirol 1.469 1.462
Vorarlberg 1.464 1.467
Vienna 1.448 1.459

future price developments

While the current fuel prices are an issue for many consumers, the ADAC also focuses on the future. A warning of the ADAC regarding rapidly increasing price increases from 2027 makes you take notice. The CO2 price, which will increase from 45 to 55 euros per ton, could become significantly more expensive in the coming years. According to tagesschau.de from 2026 can be expected with a price-stringing increase of up to 3 cents at petrol and 3.1 cents at diesel. This is related to a European reform of emission trade, which could significantly increase prices by 2027.

The ADAC President Christian Reinicke speaks of possible increases by up to 19 cents per liter, depending on the progress in climate protection. These developments raise questions, especially for people with low incomes. The ADAC calls for relief measures such as a climate field and the permanent increase in the commuter flat rate.

emission trade and climate goals

At the European level, a new CO2 emission trade system for the traffic sector and the heat of building will be introduced from 2027. In this context, the economic effects for energy suppliers and consumers are significant. The SPIEGEL emphasizes that this step is part of the aspirations to the climate neutrality up to 2045. These changes should create incentives for more economy and switch to climate -friendly technologies.

In view of the increasing fuel prices and future development, the ÖAMTC recommends driving forward and fuel -saving. Because despite the reduced crude oil prices, the pressure on consumers, in particular due to increasing CO2 prices, remains.
