Problems with the school situation in Vorarlberg: high proportion of students of extraordinary needs

A worrying trend can be observed across Austria: the students' knowledge of German decreases. In Vorarlberg in particular, the proportion of affected first graders is alarming. A total of 19.4 percent cannot follow the lessons. This trend is also reflected in other federal states such as Salzburg, Tyrol and Lower Austria

In Tyrol, the number of extraordinary students has even tripled since 2017/18. 14.5 percent of the first graders are currently visiting extraordinary classes. In Lower Austria it is at least 13.6 percent.

The fact that almost every fifth first grader in Vorarlberg has difficulty following lessons is alarming and raises questions about the causes. Possible factors could be both in the school environment and in the family area.

It is important that this problem is taken seriously and suitable measures are taken to improve the German skills of the students, since language skills are a fundamental prerequisite for school success.
