Grubber in Oberwart: Three years in prison for serial offenses

A man in his 30s, already with a criminal past of ten criminal records, is held responsible for his repeat acts. He had to answer in court after looting his accomplices in four different cemeteries, which caused a total damage of around 50,000 euros. These acts took place in the Oberwart district and in neighboring communities such as Pinkafeld, Pinggau and Rohrbach an der Lafnitz. The defendant will spend the next three years behind bars and thus also have to celebrate the festive holidays in prison.

In a current trial at the regional court in Eisenstadt, the public prosecutor's office made serious allegations against the man, who was arrested by means of a European arrest warrant. Together with his confidante, he is said to have haunted at least 48 graves and stolen valuable objects, including statues of Mary, vases and crosses. These parts were then sold in Hungary.

The taking of evidence showed that the accused admitted in the process that they acted as a "helper" in these criminal activities. "I only helped with the removal," he said in court and tried to assert a lower responsibility. However, the judge did not show a slight understanding. Her assessment was clear: the man had not improved over the years and was not allowed to hope for a particularly mild manner.

The sudden motif that he stated for his actions is particularly noteworthy - an allegedly poor financial situation. However, this statement seems unbelievable if one takes into account that according to his own statements he had several cars, two single -family houses and a condominium and also has a 47 percent share in a family hotel company.

punishment for resigning

Because of his history and his incredible triviality, the court condemned the man for a three -year sentence. The Schöffensenat under the direction of judge Doris Halper-Praunias left no doubt that these were measures that were inevitable for a man of his kind. He accepted the judgment without resistance, while the prosecutor did not make any further statements.

Although the judgment is not yet final, it is clear that the actions of the man who affected a large number of people would have enriched society a lot if they had been used differently. The looting, which caused a sensation in the region, throw a light on the problem of the cemetery robbery and the associated social challenges.
