Nature in sight: Nine communities bundle forces for green treasures

Nature in sight: Nine communities bundle forces for green treasures

In the communities of German Jahrndorf, Edelstal, Gattendorf, Neudorf, Nickelsdorf, Pama, Parndorf, Potzneusiedl and Zurndorf, an exciting project is currently being implemented, which puts the impressive natural wonder of the region into the foreground. The entire area that extends over the Leithaboden and the Hundsheim mountains to the Parndorfer Platte offers an amazing biodiversity. Among the valuable treasures can be found, among other things, the rare large fold and animal species such as Ziesel and Beaver worth protecting. Numerous protected areas play a crucial role here to preserve these unique habitats.

The “Nature in sight” project, which runs until spring 2025, aims to raise awareness of the regional natural treasures in both the population and in schools. Nine communities have closed together to emphasize the special aspects of their region together. The initiative is supported by the ARGE "Nature in the north", led by the mayors Gerald Handig from Edelstal and Gerhard Zapfl from Nickelsdorf, as well as with the technical support of "Plan & Land" and the project advice Schlögl.

education and experiences in nature

A central concern of the project is to make nature tangible. Various activities are launched for this, including 24 nature walks and 15 nature rest areas that enable visitors to relax in nature. In addition, nine exciting themed paths and numerous information boards are installed in the town centers to inform people about the special features of their surroundings. The project also includes the construction of two observation towers and three viewing terraces that invite you to linger and be amazed at the beauty of nature.

Another plus is the planned adventure garden, which will offer an outdoor class for school groups and all those interested in nature. The initiative also actively promotes the flora by placing 300 trees and shrubs and lying flower meadows, which in turn increase biodiversity. In five municipalities, natural play equipment is also set up, which make the connection to nature in a playful way.

financing of the project

The equipment of this project is financed by the municipalities involved and the LEADER funding program of the European Union "Nordburgenland Plus". The municipalities cover 25 % of the costs, while 75 % are provided by the EU. This solid cooperation enables the diverse measures to be implemented and contributes to a sustainable development of the region.

A highlight of the project will be the large regional event "Tour de Natur" on April 12 and 13, 2025. At this event, numerous activities are carried out in all participating communities to celebrate the completion of the project and to underline the importance of the unique nature for the local population and tourism.

The led excursions are already very popular and offer the opportunity to discover the region from new perspectives. Information about the various offers and appointments is available on the project website. Especially for schools such as the Nickelsdorf elementary school, the newly established tree teaching trail is a valuable addition to the lessons. The covered rest areas that are located at various points in the community invite you to enjoy the landscape and take a break

The combination of education and experience is the focus of the “Nature in sight” project. The goal is not only to advance the sensitization of the population, but also to enliven the tourism sector. This initiative already shows that the nature of the region has great potential to attract more people and to offer them unforgettable experiences in a beautiful environment.
