Schandl S winery: Future as House of Rosé in Pöttelsdorf
in Pöttelsdorf has a significant change in a local wine company. The Domaine Pöttelsdorf will now be known under the name Schandl’s winery and will position itself as a “House of Rosé”. This strategic step aims to further establish rosé wines and increase their awareness. The popular Tradition of red wines remains, which will continue to be available in the winery.
The brothers Thomas and Peter Schandl and their families have taken over the majority ownership of the Domaine Pöttelsdorf. Your approach not only includes the ongoing creation of qualitative red wines, but also the increase in market presence for rosé wines that have already achieved excellent success. Thomas Schandl, Managing Director of the winery, expressed: "We will continue the decades of tradition of grandiose blue-knitwines in Pöttelsdorf and be successful with unmistakable rosés at the wine market."
new orientation as House of Rosé
In order to meet the current challenges in the wine industry, the Schandl family chose a clear orientation: the construction of a new brand with a focus on rose wines. This decision is not accidental, since rosé wines, especially the Rosalia Dac Rosé, have been celebrating great successes since 2023. Pöttelsdorf is known for the production of high -quality rosé wines, which are mainly made from the regional leading area Blaufränkisch.
The winery recently received a gratifying award when it was awarded the Meininger International Rosé Awards as the "Best Rosé producer Austria 2024". With the 2024 vintage, Schandl’s winery is planning the introduction of a new line, which, in addition to rosé wines, also includes rosé-sucts and rosé seccos. The first product, a Rosé Brut sparkling wine, will be presented on November 21 in Pöttelsdorf at the "Salon Rosé". These products are characterized by organic-biological cultivation methods and are "sustainably Austria" certified.
Constance in red wine production
The history of the Schandl family in viticulture goes back almost a century. In 1956 a winegrowers' cooperative was founded in Pöttelsdorf, and from then on the family delivered their grapes there. This change led at a very successful time under the "Fürst Bismarck" brand, while the Pöttelsdorfer red and rose wines were one of the most popular in Austria. But over the years the framework conditions changed. In the 1980s, many sideline winnings closed their businesses due to economic difficulties, and Walter Schandl, the father of Thomas and Peter, decided to lease and buy vineyards, which paved the way for the future winery.
1992 Thomas Schandl reactivated the old press and began to press his own grapes, while most of them were delivered to the cooperative. The first success was not long in coming when he won the first gold medal with his 1994 Blaufränkisch. In 1995 he and his wife Gabi opened the popular Heurigenlokal "Stegschandl".
The financial problems of the Pöttelsdorf cooperative made a decision in 2009: the Schandl family and some friends of the winegrowers bought the winery and brought the "Domaine Pöttelsdorf" on a new way with its family made concept. The family has thus continued a long tradition in wine production and positioned itself with the new brand and focus on rosé wine for the future. This development is important not only for the company, but also for the wine lovers and the region, since the quality and offer of the wines are still guaranteed.
