Anniversary celebration in Güssing: 50 years Josef Reichl-Bund and 60 years of culture

In the picturesque Güssing, three significant anniversaries were recently celebrated in the cultural area. At a festive event in the city hall, the municipal citizens not only honored the Josef Reichen-Bund, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, but also the emigrant museum and the Josef Reichl Museum, both of which have existed for 30 years. These institutions are closely linked to the history and tradition of the region, which made the celebration all the more meaningful.

The Josef Reichen-Bund was launched in 1974 to keep the memory of the home poet Josef Reichl. After the founding of the Burgenland in 1921, Reichl represented one of the few cultural identification figures in the young state. This association was particularly alive through the contributions of Sepp Gmasz, a former ORF journalist, and Christa Grabenhofer from the Reichl-Bund. At the celebration, they reminded of the tradition of dialect poetry and the "Güssinger Encounters", which the club organized until 2011 and in which authors from different countries came together to present their works.

The roots of the Reichl Association

undoubtedly the Reichl-Bund contributes to the cultural landscape in Güssing. He was founded on the occasion of the 50th day of death by Josef Reichl and replaced a predecessor that had been founded by his friends after Reichl's death, but had only existed until the 1930s. The spirit and the legacy of Reichl continue to live through the work and events of the federal government as well as through the Reichl Museum, which has been housed in the Alte Hofmühle since 1994.

During the ceremony, Walter Dujmovit, the founder and initiator of the museum, emphasized that the success of the emigrant museum and the Reichl Museum originates its motto: "A strong faith and two hard-working hands", a saying that he heard from an emigrant from Gaas in the USA.

cultural performances from the region

The celebration was musically accompanied by the Güssinger Volkschor, the folk music ensemble of the music school and a quintet of the choir "Cantus Felix". The ensemble presented songs based on the texts of Reichl and which were listed in the Güssinger Burghof in 1999 as part of the “Landflucht” castle game. These performances were very well received and enriched the anniversary celebrations.

The joy of the well-attended event was not only noticeable among the participants, but also with Karl Pratl, the chairman of the Reichl Association, and Eduard Nicka, the President of the Burgenland community. Both honored the importance of these anniversaries for both culture as well as for the community and the history of Güssing.

An additional highlight of the event was the premium mention for the upcoming events such as the "Long Night of Museums" in the Güssing district, which invites people to deal with regional culture and history. Such celebrations once again confirm how deeply the roots of culture go in this region and how important it is to keep these traditions alive.
