Peasants put SPAR under pressure: delivery freezing up to the price cleaning
The tensions between the dairy farmers of the MGN Milk Cooperative Lower Austria and the Spar retail group are ongoing. The farmers have decided to expose their deliveries to SPAR until further notice, and until an agreement is reached by the price negotiations. This decision was announced by Leopold Gruber-Doberer, the managing director of the MGN, on Monday as part of an interview that the Austrian press agency APA carried out.
The situation is tense because all other retail chains have already shown an understanding of increasing milk prices. In contrast, SPAR positions the claims of the NÖM AG, the dairy, to the test and rejects a general price increase in the double -digit percentage range, which should apply to all products at the same time. Spar argues that this price increase is not justified for consumers, since it is requested regardless of the actual market value of the individual products.
Unclear pricing leads to delivery stop
Spar expressed itself clearly about the price negotiations and emphasized that one was only seriously negotiated with representatives of the NÖM AG. In particular, falling prices for important raw materials such as feed, sugar and packaging material are pointed out. An undifferentiated price increase is therefore rejected. Specifically, it was mentioned that SPAR has already made agreements for comprehensible price increases, for example in butter.
Although deliveries to Spar are stopped, the supply of dairy products for the region is secured. Spar makes it clear that you continue to be supplied by other dairies that offer regional dairy products. This strategic decision is intended to maintain the care despite the difficult negotiation environment.
position of the NÖM and further course
NÖM AG is based in Baden and is the second largest dairy in Austria, which has been the most of the Raiffeisen-Holding Lower Austria-Vienna. Around 2,500 members supply the NÖM with raw milk. The managing director of the MGN said that the dairy would continue to be supplied with raw materials, but the delivery of SPAR remains stopped. It was made clear that the delivery stop remains as long as no agreement is reached.
The negotiations seem to have entered a critical phase. The SPAR company is ready to talk and underlines the will to work, but the latest developments have led to a stop of the deliveries, which could further heat the arguments. The situation remains tense because consumers are pushing for a solution, while dairy farmers and SPAR continue to struggle for pricing.
