New shine for train stations: modernization of the pannonia railway completed
The train stations along the Pannoniabahn between Wulkradersdorf and Neusiedl am See have undergone an extensive renovation project, which has now been successfully completed. In the communities, the stops and windows on the lake were extensively modernized in the communities, Donnerskirchen, Breitenbrunn and Winden am See, after the existing facilities were more than three decades and urgently needed a renewal.
The mayors of the four communities express their joy about the new, contemporary appearances of the stations. The investment total of around four million euros was carried together by the ÖBB, the state of Burgenland and the respective communities. The renovation work took place in a 40 -kilometer route and were completed by Friday.

The renovation includes numerous improvements, including a newly designed edge platform that is now barrier -free and integrates a blind control system. In addition, new technology rooms and a modern platform roof were built. In addition, the rail infrastructure received new benches, waste containers, improved signage as well as modern lighting and speaker systems.
"After years of planning and several funding rounds, together with the ÖBB and the state of Burgenland, we realized a project that strengthens our community and improves mobility for all generations," said Johannes Mezgolits, the mayor of Donnerskirchen. At the train station in Donnerskirchen, the Park & Ride system was also expanded to 55 parking spaces, including special places for families and women as well as four e-charging stations for electric cars. In addition, 20 new bicycle parking spaces and three power parking spaces were created.
"We not only created a traffic system here, but a mobility hub that will sustainably improve life in Donnerskirchen," added mezgolits.
regional peculiarities and future developments
The municipality of Schützen am Mountains already set a sign with a free trial ticket in spring to motivate citizens to drive the train. With the opening of the new stop, this innovative mobility project for the municipality, Mayor Roman Zehetbauer, goes into a new phase. "Sustainability and innovation go hand in hand with the new stop," says Zehetbauer. A comprehensive renovation of the train station in Schützen is planned for 2027.
In Breitenbrunn, many commuters already use the advantages of the newly modernized train station. Here the Park & Ride system was expanded by 16 parking spaces, while 24 parking spaces were renewed. In addition, 24 new bicycle parking spaces catch the eye. The mayor Helmut Hareter noted: "The newly designed train station gives the arriving tourism a nice first impression of our market town."
The community is also enthusiastic in Winden am See. Mayor Erwin Preiner emphasizes that the facility has been expanded and now set new standards for small communities. Two years ago, an underlyed bike station for e-bikes was set up, which has now been perfectly integrated into the new train station.
In order to realize the modernization work, the route between Wulkradersdorf and Neusiedl am See was blocked from October 14 to November 22nd, which resulted in the establishment of a rail replacement traffic.
