Blitz hits: Fire of a tree after storms in Neuss!

Neuss, Deutschland - On June 1, 2025, the Situation in North Rhine-Westphalia was tense after violent thunderstorms on the previous day. According to Fireworld on the evening of May 31, the region was only marginally affected, but had significant effects on other parts of the region. The Neuss fire brigade had to carry out a total of three severe weather -related missions in which two trees in the Furth and Roselle districts overturned.

A particularly dramatic use took place in the Reuschenberger Busch: Here a tree, presumably through a lightning strike, caught fire at 9:00 p.m. The extinguishing work dragged on due to the difficult accessibility and the intensive embers for more than three hours. While the situation in Neuss remained calm overall, the fire brigade also supported the city of Krefeld in numerous storm operations. This assignment started at 11:53 p.m. and lasted until the early hours of the morning.

missions in North Rhine-Westphalia

The storms also had a significant impact in other cities of North Rhine-Westphalia. In Cologne, for example, there were more than 500 missions, while the fire brigade in the Rhein-Sieg district had to record around 430 missions. The city of Hennef was particularly affected, where full basement and slope slips were reported. In Königswinter, the water levels in living rooms rose up to two meters, which resulted in a fully alarm for all fire brigade units at 9 p.m.

The latest storm in Neuss also led to a fully alarm, triggered by heavy rains and technical problems in the rescue control center. In Grevenbroich, a car was contained in the Elsbacht tunnel, while several streets were blocked due to flooding. The retirement home in Grevenbroich acted in an exemplary manner and evacuated the residents independently.

increasing number of operations through extreme events

The increasing number of operations in North Rhine-Westphalia are not surprising, since according to the Klimaatlas nrw

The trend analysis shows that in the future a further increase in the need for use by climate change and more frequent extreme events must be expected. At the same time, however, there is no significant trend in the number of operations in the period under consideration. The fire brigade in North Rhine-Westphalia is therefore challenged and must adapt to changeable weather conditions.
