Education crisis in Austria: TIMSS study shows massive deficits!
The latest TimSS study has published alarming results on the quality of education in Austria. According to the FPÖ training spokesman Hermann Brückl, the investigation clearly shows that the "false immigration policy" and inadequate integration measures significantly reduce the level of education in schools. In the tests on mathematical and scientific competence, Austria performs above the EU average, but the political grievances and failures represent a great obstacle to development. The aim must be that Austrian students are among the best internationally, which is endangered by ideological fights in the education system, as Brückl noted.
A particularly worrying point that emerges from the TimSS study is the significant performance difference among students with a migration background. Here, 65 percent of Viennese elementary school students have to use a different language other than German, which leads to enormous challenges in class. The FPÖ politician expressed that the integration measures must have a clear priority in the future in order to alleviate these inequalities. The increase in immigration since 2015 has further exacerbated this problem, which underlines the need for a radical educational reform.
interface to international research
The TIMSS study, which serves internationally to compare the mathematical and scientific skills of students, also draws an idea of where the strengths and weaknesses are in learning content. In Austria, fourth grade students were tested in 2019, and the results show that, despite solid performance, especially in children with a migration background, there are big differences that represent one of the biggest problems internationally. The study results indicate that a comprehensive consideration of educational policy and targeted measures to improve the learning conditions are necessary to ensure the equal opportunities of all students, as was considered by the IQB educational researchers.
