Fraud affair: René Benko is said to have brought Haselsteiner for five million euros!
Wien, Österreich - The public prosecutor's investigation against René Benko, the former head of the Signa Group, assumes worrying proportions. According to information from 5min, the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA) to have damaged five million euros. The accusation is that Benko Haselsteiner has tempted to transfer this amount to a renovation officer of Signa Holding. Benko is said to have played that he will personally pay a dividend entitlement to him in the event of a loss of payment, which turned out to be wrong.
In autumn 2023, Benko Haselsteiner asked for financial support of five million euros to avoid the bankruptcy of the subsidiary Sportscheck. It is striking that Haselsteiner had previously acquired shares worth five million euros from the Signa Development in June 2022. The purchase price should be offset against future dividends. Despite the financial support made, Sportscheck got into bankruptcy, and Benko himself was explained in March 2024.
Details of the allegations
The WKStA's investigation are extensive and complicated. According to the Benko is also accused of having given a notarized guarantee declaration, which said that the five million euros would be paid back by June 30, 2024 at the latest. This happened on November 6, 2023, shortly before the bankruptcy of Sportscheck.
The allegations against Benko, whose private bankruptcy now accepts tangible proportions, seem to be condensed. In total, Haselsteiner currently holds around 14 percent of the shares in Signa Holding. This situation raises questions about how the financial complications came about and what consequences this could have for the Signa Group and their investors.
So far, Benko has not publicly commented on the allegations. For investigative reasons, WKStA does not reveal any further information about the transparency of the ongoing procedures. For citizens who are interested in information on pending procedures, the judiciary offers on its website justiz.gv.at to deal with and inspect the file. The list of allegations against the entrepreneur Benko is getting longer and it remains to be seen which further steps the public prosecutor will take. This could not only have an impact on his personal assets, but also on the future of the Signa Group.
