Baerbock in Syria: Focus on women's rights despite pixelated appearances!

As part of her controversial visit to Syria, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock caused excitement. At the greeting by the Syrian ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa in the presidential palace in Damascus, she was not offered a handshake, which led to speculation and discussions about the ceremonial practices between men and women in the Islamic context. While Al-Schaharaa shaked his hand to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, he chose a different form of greeting at Baerbock, who then went to a diplomatic distance. Baerbock commented on the situation in relation to the cultural differences and said: "When I had arrived, it was clear to me that there would obviously not have ordinary hand beats here."

conversation about women's rights and security issues

During their visit,

Baerbock and Barrot also discussed explosive topics such as the treatment of IS supporters in northeastern prisons and the chemical weapons arsenal of the fallen Assad government. These problems are related to the security situation in the region, which also made the visit complicated. Baerbock emphasized that women's rights are "the indicator for a society" and conveyed this to the responsible conversation partners in Damascus, as the French broadcaster RTL reported. The topics of security and human rights are therefore at the center of bilateral discussions.

to the embarrassment was added that Baerbock was unrecognizable in photos of her meeting with the new political representatives of Syria by a militant news channel. The telegram channel "Almharar", which is considered to be close to the Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Scham, published the pictures of the Foreign Minister and her interpreters, on which they can only be seen as blurred silhouette. While Baerbock can hardly be identified in these pictures, Barrot is clearly recognizable. Such practices in which women are removed from the public image have already attracted great attention in the past.
