Feldkirch, Österreich - On Saturday, a Hungarian family with four children experienced a dramatic bathing accident in the Walgaubad in Vorarlberg. According to Kleinezeitung.at, a video recording shows that the child kept over water for over two minutes before sank at the bottom of the 1.30 meter deep. A bathing guest discovered the girl after 40 seconds and immediately started reviving.
The situation escalated quickly and the child had to be flown to the State Hospital Feldkirch, where it was treated in the shock room. The incident led to investigations against the parents for negligent bodily harm and neglect the supervision.
swimming security and supervisory obligation
swimming accidents such as those in the Walgaubad are not uncommon in children. Many children cannot swim safely, and the DGUV emphasizes that safe swimming should be mastered after the primary school period. In the curricula of all federal states, swimming is defined as a vital ability, whereby a safe stay in the water is one of the learning objectives of swimming training.
The role of parents is crucial. Regular visits to the swimming pool promote the habituation of water, and parents should convey a positive way of dealing with water at an early stage. Baby swimming courses from the three months are advisable to enable children at first experience in the water at an early stage. The need for swimming lessons and water getting used
Important information for parents
More and more children who are no longer a safe swimmer after primary school are a growing concern. In many cases, nationwide surveys on the swimming ability of children are missing, since local statistics are often only based on surveys. The challenge is reinforced by the decline in general movement ability and the multitude of leisure activities that make water habitual more difficult.
The range of swimming courses increases, especially after the Corona break. Parents should never leave their children in the water unattended until they have at least acquired the bronze badge and make sure that their children develop the necessary swimming skills. In order to ensure safety in the water, regular visits to the swimming pool are indispensable.
