BABLER fights for clarity: coalition talks are on the brink!
In a area of tension between the SPÖ and ÖVP, SPÖ boss Andreas Babler is determined, but also prudent. In the TV interview with Thomas Mohr on Puls 24, he confirmed that there should be no "red lines" as part of the coalition negotiations with the ÖVP and the NEOS. Nevertheless, the topic of wealth and inheritance taxes remains on the table, even if it does not declare it as a condition. BABLER brought up that the current economic researchers warn that the expenditure could not be compensated for without additional income, even if one would reduce health care drastically, as from reported.
However, his statements met with resistance from the ÖVP. Chancellor Karl Nehammer made it clear that under his leadership no asset or inheritance taxes were introduced and described such claims as "wrong signal", which endangered prosperity and jobs. While Babler made his willingness to reduce costs with suggestions for reducing bureaucracy and savings in PR departments, Nehammer rejected such considerations and signaled with an interview in the "Kleine Zeitung" that there are basically no new taxes on debate, as is in ots.at was held.
BABER expects concrete figures to the budget from his negotiating partners and adheres to the need for conversations. "It is important to me that there are still talks this week," he said, pointing out that it could not only be a question of saving. His reactions during the interview showed that he is aware of the urgency of the topics and is ready to continue negotiating, even if the fronts seem hardened.
