Asylum applications in Austria: a drop by a third in April 2025!

Österreich - In 2023, Austria experienced a significant change in the number of asylum applications. According to the information from Kleine Zeitung , the asylum applications were reduced by more than a third until April. This is particularly impressive when you consider the 59,232 asylum applications of the entire year 2023, which mean a clear decline compared to 112,272 applications in 2022. 2023 was nevertheless the third year for asylum applications in recent years, after 2022 and 2015.

In Austria, only 329 asylum applications were submitted by Syrian citizens in April, with only 103 of these applications being classified as new. The majority of the applications came from refugees born in Austria. There were 512 applications for Afghan applicants, of which 117 were new. The effects of a decision by the ECJ can be felt: Afghan women are freed from the need for an individual procedure, which facilitates access to asylum.

developments in family reunification and basic care

In April 2023, Austria only recorded 138 entry as part of the family reunification. The majority of asylum seekers in Austria are minors, with more than half under 18 years old. It is particularly striking that about a third of the asylum seekers are between 0 and 3 years old. In 2023, 38,182 of non-Ukrainian people received basic care, but the occupancy of basic care has decreased by a good 2,000 places to over 63,000 people compared to the previous month, with 55 percent of the people who were cared for by the war.

A look at the asylum statistics shows that the proportion of the first applications was 56,158 in 2023, of which 74 percent were original applications. The number of applications for family reunification has more than doubled compared to the previous year, which indicates an increasing relocation of focus on family ties.

positive asylum decisions and sustainable trends

The positive development of the asylum procedure is also remarkable: so far, 17,293 positive asylum decisions have been made, and 75 percent of these notices went to Syrian citizens. This not only reflects asylum policy, but also the current geopolitical circumstances. A slow increase in basic care people indicate that Austria was a transit country for many asylum seekers. Increased border controls have led to many people who wanted to travel to other EU countries to make asylum applications in Austria, but often quickly traveled.
