Attention, Vienna! Old parking certificates invalid from July - punishment threatens!

From July 1, 2025, old parking certificates in Vienna will invalidate. This means that drivers who continue to rely on outdated parking certificates after this date have to expect a penalty of 36 euros. Matthias Nagler, traffic expert of the ÖAMTC, in particular warns drivers in districts without a valid exemption to use the new parking ticket system. In these districts, the Parkpickerl, which enables the residents unlimited parking, are of great importance.

The new parking certificates continue to offer the usual time variants of 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Drivers who use digital payment methods such as mobile phone brands can be calmed down because the system automatically calculates the tariffs. In contrast, the return or exchanging of old parking tickets from the city of Vienna are not approved, which is criticized.

return and exchange of parking certificates

Matthias Nagler advises to keep old parking licenses until the final clarification of the situation as a precaution. This is done in view of the fact that there is still no definitive case law on the refusal to exchange exchange. The City of Vienna relies on the Parliament Delivery Ordinance of 2020, which excludes exchange and refunds. So far there is no maximum judicial decision that questions the procedure.

The criticism of the city of Vienna is expressed by consumer protection organizations and the ÖAMTC, in particular against the background of the recent increases in fees. In comparison, other Austrian cities such as Graz and Linz offer exchange options according to tariff changes, which has not yet been the case in Vienna.

short park zones in Vienna

Since March 1, 2022, a nationwide short park zone has been in Vienna, which makes parking in every municipal district for a fee. Drivers need a parking ticket that costs 1.30 euros per half hour, or a parking picker, which is only available for district residents. The regulations for parking time are from Monday to Friday (weekdays) from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and enable a maximum parking time of two hours with the parking ticket or cell phones, while residents with a parking picker can park unlimited in their area.

There are specific regulations and exceptions, especially in less populated areas where free parking or different times apply. For example, parking is regulated differently in parts of the 14th, 22nd and 23rd district. In addition, there are special regulations for employees and companies as well as for e-charging stations that are also subject to temporal restrictions.
