2024: Record heat and flood - Austria in the climate socket!
St. Pölten, Österreich - Austria wrote history: The year 2024 was the warmest year in the 257-year history history, as Geosphere Austria reported. The average temperatures rose by impressive 1.8 degrees in the lowlands and 1.7 degrees in the mountains compared to the warm climatea period from 1991 to 2020. This year, the alarming trend of global warming confirmed, whereby in 2024 now one of the 25 hottest years counts. In addition, the year started with the second warmest winter, followed by records in spring and summer, which recorded new maximum values in April and September at over 100 weather stations.
The extreme heat was shown in Vienna, among other things, where the weather station inner city registered 52 hot days. This heat went hand in hand with an above -average rainfall, which was over average over the average and made the year one of the 30 most rainfall in history. September was particularly bad because it led to devastating floods in the eastern half of the country, as in St. Pölten, where 409 millimeters fell within five days. These extreme weather conditions are clearly a consequence of the man -made climate crisis.
