Filly: Austria's area threatens our future!
On today's World Reduce Day, December 5th, the state artists and the AUSTRIA's climate alliance are alarm: The area free in Austria accepts terrifying proportions. Around 20 km² of soil - this corresponds to the size of the Lake Wörthersee - through asphalting and development. The cabaret artists Robert Palfrader, Florian Scheuba and Thomas Maurer refer to this practice as “bottomless stupid”, which threatens not only nature, but also the future food safety of the nation. Leonhard Hartinger, project manager for soil protection in the climate alliance, points out that it takes over 100 years to regenerate just one centimeter of humor. "Every lost square meter is a threat to our future," said Hartinger.
community financing as a problem
The cause of this alarming area consumption sees Hartinger in the municipal finance system. Many communities agree to new construction projects in the race for revenue, for fear of losing income to neighboring communities. "It is urgently needed that we protect our valuable arable land. Instead, we should use the ten thousand hectares of industrial and commercial drings that are unused," he demands. These areas could be helpful to master the growing challenges of climate change.
However, there aregood news: More than 200 municipalities as part of the ground alliance are already relying on innovative projects for provision and restoration of the natural areas. Over 50 municipalities have started to remove action plans. Elke Kastner and Norbert Rainer, managing director of the climate and soil alliance, criticize the political standstill: "It is disappointing to see how the protection of our homeland and food supply is ignored by many political decision-makers. The population wants clear legal regulations to stop the destruction of our soils," they explain and demand a rethink both in politics as well as in dealing with unused Surfaces.
With the right strategy, Austria could find a better balance between development and nature conservation, so that future generations not only have to live in a "bottomless" country.
