Greens demand consequences: Signa scandal shakes financial world!
The Greens are emphatically addressing the controversy surrounding investor René Benko and his company Signa. In a comprehensive 73-page final report, which was presented by the Green Party leader Nina Tomaselli, a sharp assessment of the events that led to Signa's billion-dollar bankruptcy is drawn. She describes the business model as a “billion-dollar monopoly” that was based on exaggerated use of international legal regulations for real estate appreciation. According to Tomaselli, this risk was calculated as long as interest rates remained low and the real estate market was thriving, but when these conditions faded, the entire system collapsed, resulting in a dramatic bankruptcy as well oe24.at reported.
Political responsibility required
Tomaselli also renewed her allegations against Benko, which she had already raised in the U-Committee. She emphasized that Benko's “shell game” appeared to be misleading, but it entailed systematic weaknesses in the business model of a legal nature. Politicians are now obliged to take drastic measures to prevent such cases in the future. Among other things, the Greens are calling for severe penalties for failing to submit balance sheets as well as greater control through a new law that is currently being considered. According to Tomaselli, these measures are intended to prevent companies from hiding behind “sham constructions”. If possible, the National Council could decide on these changes to the law on March 26th vienna.at reported.
In addition, Tomaselli calls for a disclosure requirement for foundations and stricter tax regulations for luxury real estate. In particular, the role of former politicians, such as former Chancellors Alfred Gusenbauer and Sebastian Kurz, is sharply criticized. Tomaselli emphasizes that the two were closely connected to Benko and that it is time to make the personal connections between business and politics transparent. With their report, the Greens are also calling on politicians to finally take responsibility and address the financial grievances that have arisen from such dubious business practices.
