Bezos directs Washington Post: New rules support personal freedom!
Washington, USA - Jeff Bezos, the billion -dollar founder of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post, has announced crucial changes in the editorial focus of his newspaper. In a letter to the editorial team, which he published on social network X, Bezos explained that pages will increasingly support and defend personal freedom and free markets in the future. "We will write every day to support and defend two pillars: personal freedom and free markets," said Bezos. Although he noted that other topics were also dealt with, he clearly made it understand that opposing points of view of other media should be published. This new guideline provides excitement and split the editors, since the previous head of the opinion pages, David SHIPLEY, has already announced that he will leave the Washington Post, because it does not agree with these new rules, as the KRONE reported.
These developments are not the first to cause vertebrae in the editorial team. In January, over 400 "Washington Post" employees called for a meeting with Bezos to discuss the leadership of the newspaper. The cartoonist Ann Telnaes, who left the sheet with a dispute over a rejected drawing in 2023, also pointed out these tensions. Bezos is considered an influence in the industry who, with his decisions, not only shapes the editorial line, but also the future of the traditional sheet. Another critical point is the proximity of Bezos to Donald Trump, who has increased since the US election. Before the election, Bezos decided against an election recommendation for Kamala Harris, which met with resistance both within the editorial team and at readers, such as the Berliner Zeitung reported.
Bezos is convinced that its new focus on personal freedoms and free markets is necessary to fill a social “gap”, which in his opinion is not sufficiently taken into account in the current news environment. These changes and the associated clashes show how strong freedom of expression in the media can be influenced by the decisions of an individual and arouse the question of how this will influence the credibility and independence of the "Washington Post" in the long term.
