Carnival in Venice: 300 years of Casanova – A festival for the senses!
The Venice Carnival began today, February 16, 2025, with a spectacular water parade that drew thousands of spectators to the banks. Among them was Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who led the opening ceremony. The carnival, which runs from February 14 to March 4, this year honors the 300th anniversary of the legendary Giacomo Casanova, a colorful figure in Venetian history famous for his adventurous lifestyle. “Venice invites the world to explore the cultural heritage of Casanova, the symbol of the 18th century,” explained Brugnaro, while emphasizing the importance of the celebrations.
Numerous street art events are planned as part of the carnival, including dance, music, concerts and exhibitions. The festivities are organized by Massimo Checchetto, the set designer of the La Fenice opera house. This year's carnival, under the motto “Il tempo di Casanova”, promises an experience full of art and creativity that revives the history and atmosphere of the 18th century. This special event attracts tourists from all over the world who want to immerse themselves in Venice's magical setting and impressive masked celebrations. A highlight will be the first Valentine's Day weekend, which traditionally opens with an impressive water show at the Arsenale, accompanied by live performances and cultural performances.
High expectations for the festival
The carnival program, which will take place in several districts and on the lagoon islands, will provide a festive framework to honor the importance of Casanova while preserving Venetian tradition. The parades of the symbolic floats are authorized and cover the entire region, including Mestre and numerous lagoon islands. “Casanova is a personality who remains inspiring to this day and whose exciting life offers the opportunity to explore the values and heritage of Venice,” says Fabrizio D’Oria, Managing Director of Vela spa, who coordinates the various activities.
