Free lunch for all students: SPD is planning a big reform!
Flensburg, Deutschland - The SPD plans to introduce a free lunch for students after the next federal election. Matthias Miersch, the Secretary General of the SPD, said in an interview with "Bild am Sonntag" that a concept is currently being worked on that takes into account a comprehensive citizens' council on nutritional policy. The priority is on the introduction of a free lunch in daycare centers and schools, financed by the federal government. Miersch emphasized that not only health costs that arise from improper nutrition in children are a reason for this project, but also the expectation that the introduction of such a program will have positive effects on school performance. However, both the financial and the legal framework is still unclear, as Bundesag.de reported.
financing questions in focus
The Committee on Food and Agriculture has already discussed legal and financial measures to implement free lunch. One of the central recommendations of the Citizens' Council is the clarification of responsibilities and financing. Current reports show that direct financing from the federal budget may require a change in the Basic Law. Various approaches were proposed to minimize the financial burdens for the federal states, including a redistribution of sales tax.
Political differences are also evident: While the SPD emphasizes the importance of a healthy school dinner for the promotion of learning, the FDP expresses concerns and argues that the responsibility for this should be at the federal states. The AfD MP emphasized that it is not justifiable to provide all children with free lunch regardless of their origin. Nevertheless, the SPD remains optimistic that suitable solutions enable a comprehensive introduction of free lunch through suitable solutions. In view of the enormous costs caused by nutritional diseases - around 63 billion euros annually - the Greens advocate an early implementation in order to reduce health costs in the long term.Details | |
