Neos leaves negotiations: Political earthquake in Vienna!

In a surprising step, the NEOS, under the leadership of Beate Meinl-Reisinger, broke off their negotiations with the black and red coalition on January 3, 2025. This happened after intensive negotiations with Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ), who took place overnight. Meinl-Reisinger made it clear that despite several compromise suggestions, there was no breakthrough and that there were no central reform concerns. "Unfortunately not only no progress, but actual steps," said the party leader, who criticized the ruthlessness of the other parties and spoke of "myopia". Her explanations emphasized the lack of the necessary reforms in federalism, healthcare and pension system.

reactions and outlook

The decision of the NEOS led to different reactions in the political arena. Meinl-Reisinger thanked the representatives of the ÖVP in particular and recognized their interest in reforms, while she showed the Social Democrats of the SPÖ understanding of their position, but also pointed out to the civic responsibility not to lose sight of the location. At the same time, she assured that the NEOs are still ready to work together constructively in parliament and support the previous reform agenda, as 5min.at.

In Lower Austria, the reactions to the withdrawal of the NEOS are mixed. While some politicians welcome the decision, others see this as a step backwards in the reform process. The step shows how fragile the coalition talks are and leaves questions about the stability of the current government. For the first time, voices have also become loud that question political culture and the will to reform in the stuck situation. Also noe.orf.at reported on the mixed resonances in Lower Austrian politics and the effects of this decision on future cooperation.
