A moving homage: The story of photographer Kurt Bardos
From April 11, 2025, a new exchange exhibition will be presented in the upper women's gallery, which is dedicated to the photographer Kurt Bardos and his moving family history. This impressive exhibition, which will be shown by November 9, illuminates the life of the Bardos family, which was shaped by the Shoah, the communist dictatorship and several migrations. Martha Keil, the curator of the exhibition, is planning a unique comparison of Bardos' artistic photographs and the personal memories of his sister Ilse, who tells the family history, as noe.orf.at reported.
an impressive artist
Kurt Bardos was born in Brno in 1914 and originally had medical training, but he found his true calling in photography. In 1941 his family was deported to Theresienstadt, and in 1944 the trace of Bardos and his wife Zdenka lost in Auschwitz. His photographs, which could be secured in an almost miraculous rediscovery process, show a creative interpretation of the stylistic devices of the new objectivity and are extremely precise. In addition to the impressive images, two video interviews with family members as well as noteworthy objects from family-owned are also presented, which have been preserved despite the traumatic breaks in history, so former-synagoge.at .
In addition to the exhibition, there will be the popular "Jewish Weekends" from May 16 to 18 and 25 May 25th, which will take place under the title "Sepharad - The Jewish Spain". Artists such as the ensemble Al’fado from Lisbon and the Spanish singer Ana Alcaide appear here, which further deepens the connection to Jewish culture.
