Murder trial in Venice: Husband admits cruel act on ex-girlfriend!

In one of Italy's most shocking murder trials, Filippo Turetta was sentenced to life in prison yesterday. The 22-year-old biomedical engineering student confessed to brutally murdering his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin on November 11, 2023. After a week-long escape that took him via Austria to Leipzig, he was finally arrested. Turetta had apparently been unable to accept that the relationship was over, confessing: "I did a terrible thing, but she couldn't have belonged to anyone else." South Tyrol News reported.

The gruesome details of the crime are harrowing: Turetta stabbed Giulia in an industrial area near Vigonovo. The forensic pathologist found over 20 stab wounds on her body, which showed clear defensive injuries - a sign of her desperate struggle for her life. She reportedly died almost immediately from a crucial stab wound that severed a vital artery. The case has sparked massive protests against gender-based violence in Italy and prompted parliament to take action. A new law aims to better protect women at risk and strengthen measures to combat domestic violence, such as crown reported.

The motive behind the crime

Turetta's obsessive jealousy and his inability to accept the break in the relationship led to this tragic crime that raises many questions. According to his statements, he did not understand “what was going on in his head,” while at the same time emphasizing that it was not his intention to kill Giulia. However, this could be part of a defense strategy to portray the murder as an impulsive act, while evidence such as the knife recovered from him and the preparations to escape indicate that the murder may have been pre-planned. Sadly, Giulia Cecchettin will be buried in Padua on Tuesday, with tens of thousands of mourners expected from all over Italy.
