The focus: Experts warn of the risks of basic income!

On January 8, 2025, a central point was emphasized in the political debate about economic strategies and social systems: increasing competitiveness and strengthening the economy. According to Wirtschaftsdienst this is a common goal of FPÖ and ÖVP, whereby Maik Schneider from the University of Graz emphasizes that additional measures could be necessary to streamline the budget deficits to three percent. He mentions possible adjustments in the pension system that could encounter resistance to a claim from the SPÖ. In order to implement the increase in tax revenue, tax increases and cuts in state expenditure are also in space.

In another aspect of the debate, the concept of an unconditional basic income (BGE) is discussed as a potential solution for the distribution of income and the associated economic challenges. As in a contribution by Wirtschaftsdienst , the introduction of a BGE could have far-reaching effects on the labor market, the wage level and the goods markets. The basic income that is granted to all citizens without consideration would replace the previous social systems and could have both positive and negative effects on the economy, depending on the type of financing.

With regard to the financing, different approaches such as an increase in VAT and a possible asset tax are conceivable that could have all the effects on state finances and general economic situation. A change in the job offer, especially in the low -wage sector, could occur and influence the distribution of income within society, so that questions of social justice and economic stability are closely linked. These considerations play a central role in the decision as to whether and how the concept of basic income can be implemented in practice.
