Vienna police celebrated: 158 heroes honored for more security!
On December 6, 2024, 158 police officers were awarded the renowned security merit awards in Vienna. This honor, which was initiated by the Raiffeisenlandesbank Vienna-Lower Austria, recognizes the special commitment and moral courage of the officials for security in the federal capital. Martin Hauer, board member of the bank, emphasized the cooperation between the police and the bank, which aims to ensure the highest level of security in society. “For 46 years, we have been using the Security Merit Awards to focus on people who have made a special commitment to the security of our city,” said Hauer.
Diverse assignments and exceptional achievements
This year's award winners include 19 officers who developed a concept in the “Blackout” project to ensure the police's operational capabilities in crisis and disaster situations. Another highlight is the “Together.safe” initiative, in which 15 officials organized information events with various communities, including the Islamic Religious Community in Austria and the Jewish Community of Vienna, to promote mutual understanding. In addition, 13 officers were trained to handle climate-related demonstrations to ensure security during the “Last Generation” protests, where many demonstrators glued themselves to streets.
The operations during a shooting and knife attack in October 2023 were particularly challenging, in which the perpetrators were caught within two and a half hours. A team of three officers received recognition for their careful approach to 150 video interviews with sexually abused children. In addition, the Josef Holaubek Medal of Honor was awarded to an officer who was seriously injured during protests against Vienna's migration policy in July 2024 while attempting to arrest a suspect. That incident left lasting health consequences for the officer, the News reports ots.at.
These honors illustrate the outstanding achievements and the special responsibility that the Vienna police assume in their daily service, as also in the report by meinkreis.at held.
