Syria celebrates the fall of the Assad regime: hope for freedom!
The Syrian revolution has opened a new chapter! After 24 years of tyrannical rule under Bashar al-Assad, the regime was defeated. The Hajat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels took control of Damascus within just 12 days, ending the rule of the Assad family. Abd Basat Motlak, a Syrian living in Carinthia, describes the joy of the diaspora: “The Syrians have never felt as free in 55 years as they do now,” he says. He hopes for a democratic future, even if returning to his homeland remains complicated for him as “the situation due to the war remains catastrophic,” reports meinkreis.at.
Future in transition
The fall of the Assad regime opens up the opportunity for a new beginning for Syria, but the general conditions are challenging. HTS leader Abu Muhammad al-Jolani called on fighters to return and lay down their arms and stressed the need for stable institutions and social services in the transition period. Former Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, who was captured, says he is willing to work with the rebels and calls for free elections, reports Euronews. These political developments could be crucial for a fairer Syrian society.
The international focus on Syria continues: Israel has deployed military troops to the Golan Heights buffer zone to ensure the security of its borders, while the Arab League strongly condemns the military presence. Nearly 14 million people worldwide have been affected by the Syrian refugee crisis, and questions about how to rebuild the country after more than a decade of civil war remain unanswered as citizens hope for change.
