Art in the church room: Lent period exhibition stimulates thinking about
Linz, Österreich - In the Linz Ursulinenkirche, an extraordinary art exhibition under the title "Memento Mori" opens its gates on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. This local presentation, which will be shown by April 18, combines the work of the renowned artists Nicole Six, Paul Petritsch and Werner Reiterer. Organized by the Ursulinenkirche, the St. Severin Forum and the Department of Art and Culture of the Diocese of Linz, the exhibition aims to raise existential questions and to encourage visitors to think about the cycle of life and transience. Curator Martina Gelsinger describes the intention with the words that the art should "invite you to think".
The highlight of the exhibition includes the film mining "The Human and Animal Being" by Six and Petritsch, which returns after 16 years. This installation, which shows animals such as goats and donkeys in the church room, challenges the boundaries between humans and animals and addresses the coexistence of all living beings. In the crypt you can see Werner Reiterer's wall drawing "Terra", which symbolically acts as a "grave slab" for the earth. Here the birth and death date of our planet is noted- based on astrophysical calculations that show us that the earth is 4.54 billion years old and is devoured by the sun in about 6 billion years, as Reiterer explains.
art and dialogue in sacred space
The Ursulinenkirche does not see itself as a museum, but as a lively place of dialogue between theology, aesthetics and society. Angelika Stummer, responsible head of the church, emphasizes the importance of these projects and invites visitors to deal with the works and to join the exchange about central human issues such as life, death and creation. The exhibition is opened in the evening after Ash Wednesday liturgy with the artists, followed by regular tours and art conversations that take place in the unique atmosphere of the baroque church.
