On April 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., an exciting book presentation will take place in the Knights' Hall of Schloss Bruck in Lienz. The title of the work is "Writing, picture and memory - graffiti in the context of a semiotics of the Gothic frescoes in the chapel of Bruck Castle". The editors Rudolf Ingruber and Harald Stadler expect a lively discussion on a topic that affects not only art history, but also society in general.

No conventional reading format is chosen during the presentation; Instead, the participants can expect a conversation with the author: inside. The important participants include art historians and dolomite city author Rudolf Ingruber as well as representatives of the Federal Monument Office and the University of Innsbruck. In addition, the master's thesis is highlighted by Anna Petutschnig, who has dealt intensively with graffiti that were discovered in the chapel.

research on historical graffiti

During their systematic examination in winter 2017/2018, two students from the University of Graz discovered a total of 780 graffiti, which are carved into stone, plaster or wood and date from several centuries. These graphic messages not only represent personal concerns, but also a historical phenomenon that goes back to cultural history. As graffitarforschung.de emphasizes, graffiti reflect social norms and are often an expression of resistance to established systems.

The book also contains discussions from an international colloquium that took place in October 2021 and shows graffiti research as a young but more important field. The codes of graffiti and their authors, including the well -known artist Franz von Defregger, are also discussed. The questions about the time classification of the chapel by Simon von Taisten, which are dealt with in the book, are particularly interesting

cultural relevance of graffiti

graffiti are not only a simple art phenomenon, they also bring light into the social structures of a society. They have established themselves as anarchic, ego -related messages that often polarize and experience both support and rejection. Historically, there were numerous attempts by the authorities to combat graffiti, which often led to despite and resistance among the graffiti actors. In the meantime, some authorities have changed their tactics and rely on the rapprochement and state funding of graffiti.

The book gives insights into these complex relationships and shows that there are also many questions in the context of graffiti research that are still open. Entry to the book presentation is free and offers everyone interested the opportunity to learn more about this interesting topic. Görz, the currently European Capital of Culture, will not be represented in this presentation, which makes the discussion about the cultural importance of graffiti all the more interesting.
