Drosten: Lockdown for unvaccinated no longer makes sense today!
The renowned virologist Christian Drosten made it clear in a recent Interview that a lockdown for unvaccinated from today's perspective would no longer be justified. In Zib 2, he spoke about the developments of the past five years since the outbreak of pandemic and found that the mortality of Covid-19 has now been comparable to that of influenza. At the beginning of pandemic, however, mortality was 16 to 20 times higher than in the flu and the aim of reducing this relationship. According to Drosten, there are no evidence, despite the herdimity that has not yet been fully achieved, which indicates an ineffectiveness of the measures set, such as oe24.at reported.
The role of vaccinations and masks
Particularly noteworthy is Drosten's assessment of the effectiveness of vaccinations. He explained that vaccinations represent one of the most effective measures in medicine and have made a decisive contribution to saving human life. He also rejected criticism of mask obligation and emphasized that protection by wearing FFP2 masks was particularly high. On the other hand, there was insufficient evidence of their effect on the transmission rate of SARS-COV-2 when washing hands and frequent ventilation. The topic of comprehensive testing was also addressed, with drosts noted that mass tests-such as the gurgelt tests in schools-have effectively contributed to reducing the infections, such as
drusten also expressed concerns about school closings and considered a stricter policy in some areas to be exaggerated. Furthermore, he was asked about the teachings from pandemic, including compared to countries such as Sweden, where no general lockdown took place. Here, too, a differentiated view of the data is necessary to understand the actual effects of the measures taken. While pandemic presented society with great challenges, Drosten is optimistic that we can draw important teachings for the future from the experience.
