The increasing figures for attacks on police officers are a worrying phenomenon that is not only evident in Vienna. According to Statista, around 2,740 acts of violence against emergency services were recorded in 2023, which is a maximum. These incidents are often seen in connection with extreme situations, alcohol and drug abuse as well as mental previous illnesses.
The number of acts of violence, which made around 4% of all crimes recorded in 2024, has also increased. This tendency raises questions about the security of emergency services and the general potential for violence in society. In a survey, 94% of German violence and aggression against people from the areas of politics, police and rescue services see a serious problem.
