Tuna for record price: 1.3 million euros at New Year's auction!

At the first tuna auction in Tokyo, a blue-finished tuna for 207 million yen, which corresponds to around 1.3 million euros, was sold. This was the second highest price that has been achieved at this annual event since the start of the recordings. The tuna weighed 276 kilograms and was caught off the coast of grandma, on the northern tip of the main island of Honshu.

The Fischer Masahiro Takeuchi described the horned fish with the words: "As fat as a cow". The previous record price for a blue-finished tuna was achieved in 2019 and was around 2.2 million euros. During the Corona pandemic, the prices for tuna fell significantly. The high prices at the New Year's auction are now mainly to be regarded as PR campaigns that do not necessarily reflect the quality of the fish. The fish was bought by Shinji Nagao, the President of a Sushi Restaurant operator, that emphasized that the first tuna of the year was lucky.

Details about the auction

The auction took place on the popular Toyosu market in Tokyo. The buyer was the Onodera Group, which has a sushi restaurant awarded with a Michelin star. It paid the second highest price in the history of these auctions. The highest price for a tuna was also reached on this market in 2019 and was 2.05 million euros for a 278-kilogram Blaufen-Hunfisch.

The Onodera Group has always paid the highest amount at the auction in the past five years. These price data have been collected and reflected on the development of the market since 1999, including the decline during the Corona pandemic, as a catering institution, such as Deutschlandfunk reported.

Japan remains the largest consumer of Blaufen-Tunfisch worldwide, which underlines the importance of such auctions for the local gastronomy and fishing.
