New life for the historical Hotel Lunik in Eisenhüttenstadt!

The former GDR Hotel "Lunik" in Eisenhüttenstadt, a once prestigious building, faces a gentle decay after its closure. The facade of the building, which opened in 1963, is heavily dilapidated and reflects the loss of the former shine. "Lunik" was named after the first Soviet moon mission and used to serve as accommodation for travel groups from the Soviet Union as well as for political prominence and guest workers.

The hotel, which was designed by the architects Martin Maleschka, Willi Stamm, Herbert Härtel and Hermann Enders, is considered the symbol of the city. Maleschka himself sees the "Lunik" as his favorite object, which embodies the GDR building art. Inside there are still original works of art that result in a cosmic-lunar atmosphere. The latest discoveries behind plasterboard have revealed an old wall design that consists of structured stones.

nine use of the listed building

The building industry Eisenhüttenstadt (Gewi) has been owner of the "Lunik" for a year and has considered initial designs for a possible nine use of the listed house. Potential uses range from gastronomy to living space, offices, club rooms to a dormitory or a climbing hall. The lower floor should be preserved for public use, while various options could be pursued in the upper area. A coordination with the monument office is necessary for changes to blankets and walls.

The hotel, whose original name was "Kriwoi Rog" and was later renamed "Stalinstadt", was an important element of the hospitality landscape in Eisenhüttenstadt until the final closure in 2000. Most recently, the hotel had recorded around 30,000 overnight stays every year before the company was discontinued. In 2002 it was protected as a single monument, and in 2023 the urban building industry took over the building. In the future, the hotel should also serve as part of a competition for redesign.
