Spring in Vienna: Shannigarten season starts with hustle and bustle!
Mayor Michael Ludwig ceremoniously opened the Schanigarten season in Vienna today. Together with Walter Ruck, the President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, and Wolfgang Binder, the specialist group chairman of the Vienna coffee houses, the first coffee of the year was enjoyed in bright sunshine in the Diglas Café. Ludwig emphasized the indispensable role of the gastronomy for the Viennese economy and the great value of the Shanei offering for the attitude to life in the city. He stated: "The opening of the season of the Vienna Schanigenten is not only a traditional sign of spring and conviviality, but also a commitment to the strength of our gastronomy." This happens in the context of a record -breaking tourism year, as he stated.
rules and controls for Shanigenten
Since the winter of 2023/2024, Viennese restaurateurs have been allowed to operate their shanigents all year round, but under strict requirements. The Shanigrats must actually be used and must not serve as a storage area for tables and chairs, as has often been the case in the past. This led to demands for sharper controls by the district leaders. Mayor Ludwig met with the district representatives in January to discuss compliance with the rules because the public spatial planning and the revitalization of the city had priority.
According to current reports, 3,035 controls of the Shaniga Harfs have so far been carried out in the city, whereby there were 18 revocation of permits, ten of them in the first district. The city relies on continuous checks to ensure that the ShaniGarts meet the regulations and are properly operated, as wien.gv.at reported.
