The University of Vienna has reached a significant milestone by being included in the... Top 100 of the world's universities in the "THE World University Ranking" was ranked 95th. This marks a historic development for Austria's higher education landscape, as the university is the first Austrian institution to establish itself among the top 100 universities.
In the last eight years, the University of Vienna has improved from 165th place to its current rank. This extraordinary turnaround is the result of targeted strategic actions and progress in various areas.
Research and teaching in focus
The improvements are based, among other things, on increased quality of teaching, better supervision ratios and an increasing number of doctoral degrees. The university was also able to increase its income from applied research through successful industrial collaborations. Rector Sebastian Schütze was pleased with the placement and emphasized that this was the result of a strategic orientation aimed at positioning the University of Vienna as a top international university.
The ranking is based on the analysis of 18 indicators that cover five main categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, internationalization and cooperation with industry. The University of Vienna achieved particularly good results in terms of international orientation and research quality, which reflects clear progress in global competition.
The competition in the ranking
Although the University of Vienna made it into the top 100, there are other Austrian universities that are also well placed. The Medical University of Vienna reached 181st place, while the Medical University of Innsbruck rose from 251-300 to 201-250. The University of Innsbruck is in the ranking group 301-350, and the TU Graz and the University of Salzburg are ranked 601-800.

Science Minister Eva Maria Holzleitner commented positively on the developments and described Austria as a safe haven for free research. Progress in the rankings is not only an indicator of the quality of academic institutions, but also an important factor in attracting talent and collaborations.
Overall, the ranking not only reflects the individuality of the universities, but also the efforts of the entire education system to maintain international appeal.
